Food is Social
Food is social; it brings people from all different backgrounds, cultures, or societies together. My friends and I have a tradition of always getting together and going to this, quite frankly, awful Chinese buffet in our hometown. It is our way of catching up with one another. Even if the food is not topnotch, the companionship is. That is what it means to me; food does not have to be overly amazing for it to bring people together, the company can make the meal all the better and enjoyable.
I remember the first time we all decided to go there together, our friend swore that it was the best. Sadly however, we did not realize she only thought this do to the sugary donuts that most Chinese buffets serve. We went through the short buffet lines, filled our plates, and grabbed whichever silverware needed, got drinks and picked the booth with the least people around it. The orange chicken was cold, the vegetables soggy, and the fortune cookies stale. The crab puffs were actually quite good, but regardless of their satisfactory element, that is not the point of the story. We still go back to the place, and we have been since the summer before our sophomore year. I have never fallen in love with the food they serve because it is only edible, it is simply the fact that it brings us all together. To catch up, tell stories, and enjoy the time we have together. Food has no special meaning to me. There is no dish out there that I would be entirely distraught if it ceased to exist. I do not have one favorite dish, I have ones I like more than others, and ones I cannot bare to eat and or smell. Food is food. Enjoy it, but enjoy the company it brings as well. Also, eat in general, do not by any means starve yourself, live life, you only get one chance.
